    History
    A renaissance legacy

Villa Mangiacane's history is deeply intertwined with Tuscany’s rich past. It began in the 14th century when the noble Machiavelli family, prominent in power and culture, commissioned the construction of what is now known as Palazzo Machiavelli. Legend has it that Michelangelo himself contributed to its architectural splendor.

Historically, it is documented that Niccolò Machiavelli, a pivotal figure of Renaissance Florence and the father of modern political science, wrote his renowned treatise “The Prince” nearby, in the studio of the Albergaccio, connected to Villa Mangiacane by a path that winds through the estate.

The name "Mangiacane" is derived from Latin, meaning "Great Dog," referencing the Neapolitan mastiffs that once guarded the estate. Today, two imposing stone dog sculptures stand at the gate's pillars, paying tribute to the residence's storied past. The history of Villa Mangiacane is revealed through its intricate details, frescoes, and fine furnishings, bearing witness to extraordinary eras and grand transformations.
